One of the greatest gifts you can give is your time
I'm a descendant of southern Italian farmers who always tried to convince us not to follow them into farming and get "prestigious jobs". In fact, my father became a medical doctor, but that never made him happy — he was the happiest when pruning trees or growing veggies in our back yard. And I'm the same. Even though I like my day job, my true passion is growing food; being out in the fields, feeling the soil on my hands and smelling the scent of earth.
I'm always looking for opportunities to help out in any organic farming, permaculture and self-sufficiency related project. Gifting my time to such projects has allowed me to meet some of the most inspiring people and create meaningful experiences that have helped me broaden my knowledge.
The volunteering experience that I cherish the most was the year I spent helping out at Helen's Bay Organic . During my time there, I met Dave, the farm manager. Dave graduated with a degree in Political Science and worked in politics for several years until he left it all behind to become a farmer. When I asked him why he abandoned his career in politics instead of becoming a political leader and try to change the world, he replied saying that growing our own food organically was the first step toward changing the world. This blew my mind at first but once I let that sink, I realised how right he was.
By growing our own food sustainably and in tune with Mother Nature, we liberate ourselves and stop relying on big, greedy corporations that are driving all of our ecosystems to extinction. So, as Gandhi said, we should be the change that we wish to see in the world.
